چکیده
Evolutionary history suggests that the marsupials entered South America from North America about 75 million years ago and subsequently dispersed into Australia before the separation between South America and Antarctica-Australia. A question of interest is whether marsupial peptides resemble the corresponding peptides of Old or New World mammals. Previous studies had shown that "little" gastrin of the North American marsupial, the opossum, is identical in length to that of the New World mammals, the guinea pig and chinchilla. In this report, we demonstrate that opossum cholecystokinin octapeptide, like that of the Australian marsupials, the Eastern quoll and the Tamar wallaby, is identical to the cholecystokinin octapeptide of Old World mammals and differs from that of the guinea pig and chinchilla. However, opossum vasoactive intestinal polypeptide differs from the usual Old World mammalian vasoactive intestinal polypeptide in five sites: [sequence; see text].

Effect of intraventricular administration of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide on body temperature in the rat.
Intracerebroventricular injection of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) into rat caused a temporary elevation of body temperature followed by a decrease to below the control level. Hypothermia induced by cholecystokinin octapeptide was abolished by simultaneous administration of VIP. Hypothermia following pentobarbital administration was reduced by successive injections of VIP. The results...
متن کاملEffect of an Antagonist of Vasoactive Intestinal Polypeptide on Biological Rhythm of Rest Activity in the Rat
Abstract Vasoactive Intestinal Polypeptide (VIP), has been found in different neurotransmitter systems and exists in various nerve tracts in the brain. Potential role of this peptide in physiological processes such as regulation of sleep and wakefulness, and biological rhythms has been confirmed in several reports. In the present research effects of intracerebroventricular (ICV) injection of a...
متن کاملChanges in brown adipose tissue metabolism following intraventricular vasoactive intestinal peptide and other gastrointestinal peptides in rats.
The effects of intracerebroventricular (icv) vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), secretin, glucagon, and cholecystokinin-octapeptide (CCK-8) on the thermoregulatory and cardiovascular systems were studied in conscious rats. The icv injection of VIP at a dose of 10 micrograms produced hyperthermia with an increase in the positive difference between the interscapular brown adipose tissue (BA...

Caerulein (I) is a decapeptide present in the skin of Hyla caerulea and other Australian hylid frogs,1' 2 of Leptodactylus pentadactylus labyrinthicus and related South American leptodactylid frogs, and finally of the South African amphibian Xenopus laevis.3 The South American hylid frogs of the Phyllo-medusa genus contain a decapeptide, phyllocaerulein(II), strictly related to caerulein.4 The ...
متن کاملAction of cholecystokinin and cholinergic agents on calcium transport in isolated pancreatic acinar cells.
COOH-terminal octapeptide of cholecystokinin (CCK-octapeptide) and the cholinergic agent carbamylcholine each produced a fourfold stimulation of calcium outflux in guinea pig isolated pancreatic acinar cells. Neither agent altered calcium influx. Stimulation of calcium outflux was rapid and specific, was abolished by reducing the incubation temperature to 4 degrees C, and was a saturable functi...
